How to measure your fireplace for a proper fit
!
Standard Rectangular Masonry Fireplace
Measurements should be taken with a
steel tape and should be accurate to within 1/16 inch. The fireplace should
also have the
following:
>
Suitable mounting surfaces on top and bottom of the opening.
>
The mounting surface must be level
>
The Fireplace opening should be square. Any out of square conditions
will be exaggerated or the door may not fit.
Please use the following picture to determine the
size of your enclosure

If you are planning to flush (inside fit) mount the enclosure (when
available), we recommend using the smallest width and height
measurements and deducting a maximum of 1/8" from the height and
width. Arch Doors need template, see below for instruction of submitting
a suitable template.
If you are planning outside mounting, we recommend using the largest
width and height measurements and adding a minimum of 1 1/2" to the
width and 1 1/2" to the height.
Arch Top
Fireplace
Provide template:
Make an exact duplicate of fireplace opening. Specify finish include a
photograph of fireplace to clarify the overall problem.
| Usually
two persons are required to make a good template. |
Kraft Paper
Method
 |
|
One
Person hold a large sheet of heavy Kraft paper across arch top
of fireplace. Cellophane tape can be use to aid in stretching
Kraft paper tightly over front. Or, the paper can be taped to
plywood or stiff cardboard while marking, then removed for
mailing.
A second person marks outline of edge of fireplace opening with
a soft pencil as accurately as possible.
After removing paper from fireplace, measure with steel rule:
Opening width. Total height in center, Both sides from hearth to
point where arch starts. List these dimensions on template as
indicated by arrows on above diagram.
Mark "Right Side" onto template, as when facing fireplace. |
|
Stiff Cardboard or Plywood Method

|
|
One
person holds large sheet of stiff cardboard or plywood against
fireplace opening.
Locate the approximate edges of fireplace, cut several "arm
holes" near the edge to enable you to reach inside and
trace the shape of the fireplace opening onto the backside of
cardboard or plywood.
Cut the outline of the fireplace from the board.
Set the template inside the fireplace opening to determine if it
has been traced and cut accurately.
Correct the variations with glue and pieces of board or, if
necessary, make a new template.
Using a steel rule, measure the width at the bottom of the
fireplace: measure total height from hearth to center of arch.
If there are straight sides, show distance from hearth to points
where arch starts. List these dimensions on template as
indicated by arrows on above diagram.
Mark
"Right Side" onto template, as when facing fireplace.
Do not fold cardboard template. |

Determine
the manufacturer and model number of the fireplace. This
information is usually located high on the inside wall of the
fireplace above the refractory panels or behind the mesh curtain
on the inset return. Next follow the steps below. |
 |
Before measuring closely inspect the
firebox and look for anything that will hinder the operation of the glass
and track system. Things to look for are: protruding screw heads, existing
tracks that may have to be removed, damper handles, shields, or venting.
Proceed by measuring the width of the firebox Y/Z. Next measure the height
of the firebox A/B/C. Also care must be taken when measuring to
insure that the firebox will accept the track assembly shown below. |
